Caravel

Caravel is a floating sculpture that purifies urban water bodies through algae-based bioremediation. Developed by Furf Design Studio with Dr. Bruno Libardoni for the incredible Infinito Mare, Caravel symbolizes care, regeneration, and the connection between people and the environment.

The technology behind Caravel enhances a natural process. Native algae grow within it, feeding on (and removing) local pollutants such as phosphorus and sewage while simultaneously absorbing carbon and releasing oxygen into the water. As the algae mature, they are harvested and repurposed into fertilizers, biofuels, and other sustainable materials—turning the problem into a solution.

Its design is both functional and symbolic: inspired by historic caravels, its shape, when viewed from above or the side, reveals a large water droplet, reinforcing its purpose of regeneration. Beyond purification, Caravel also monitors water quality, identifying which pollutants are present and where, providing strategic environmental data for future action.

Its structure was designed to balance maximum durability (even under intense adverse conditions), easy logistics, and practical handling, all with minimal maintenance. Caravel is transported disassembled in a compact form, and its assembly is simple and intuitive, requiring only a few steps.

More than just clean technology, Caravel is a visible manifesto. Its presence in a lake or river signals that the ecosystem is being well cared for, and its removal sparks a sense of urgency for preservation.

A fusion of science and design, innovation and poetry, Caravel reminds us that this can be the generation of regeneration.
